Age Spots Don’t Have to be Permanent
Over time, our bodies begin to age and our skin loses its once youthful appearance. While some people age gracefully, most are forced to confront wrinkles and age spots. Are you growing old gracefully or are age spots revealing your true age? While you can’t completely halt your skin’s aging process, you can alter it. By understanding why we get age spots and how to prevent them, you may be able to hold on to youth a bit longer and promote healthy skin in the future.
Why Do We Get Age Spots?
For simplicity’s sake, age spots (also known as liver spots) are the result of repeated sun exposure over an extended period of time. While they don’t have anything to do with your liver, they have a lot to do with solar rays.
Our skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis (outermost layer), the dermis (middle layer), and the sub cutis (base layer). The dermis layer contains collagen, elastin, and a variety of other fibers that give your skin its youthful, smooth appearance. When these fibers are damaged by UV radiation (UVR), your skin incorrectly rebuilds. The result of this process is wrinkles, freckles, and age spots. Other contributing factors include poor diet, lack of exercise, poor skin care, and genetics.
Prevention of Age Spots
The good news is that
most age spots can be prevented. The Skin Cancer Foundation has provided a few recommendations for slowing the development of age spots on your
skin. Here is a brief look at some of their tips:
·
Use Sunscreen. The
best way to prevent age spots is through the use of sunscreen. No matter the
time of year, sunscreen helps your skin maintain its youthful, radiant appearance.
Sunscreen prevents harm to your skin’s fibers and allows your immune system the
chance to repair existing damage.
·
Exfoliate. By
exfoliating, you remove the buildup of dead skin cells, remnants of
self-tanning sprays, and other dirt that doesn’t come off with regular
showering. The result is smoother, less-blotchy skin.
·
Hydrate. Your
skin needs hydration to maintain its youthful glow. Exposure to the sun,
chlorine, and salt water dehydrates your skin and can cause it to age more
rapidly. Dehydrated skin is far more susceptible to age spots.
Treatment of Age Spots
While proper measures
of prevention reduce the risk of age spots, it takes a little more effort to
reverse them once they have appeared. A variety of treatment options
for age spots exist. Here are a few of the most common:
·
Medication. It
is common to use medication, prescriptions or over the counter, to reverse age
spots. Most products use a combination of bleaches and mild steroids to fade
spots over time.
·
Laser/Light Therapy. For a slightly more invasive approach, some people
use laser and intense pulsed light therapy to destroy melanin-producing cells
without damaging the surface of the skin. Age spots begin to fade after
receiving multiple treatments.
·
Freezing.
For a single age spot or small cluster, dermatologists will sometimes use
cryotherapy. This procedure uses liquid nitrogen to destroy the extra dark
pigment.
·
Dermabrasion. This
procedure consists of sanding down the outermost layer of skin and allowing a
new layer to grow in its place.
·
Chemical Peel.
This process involves applying an acid on the outer layer of skin to burn away skin
spots. Much like the dermabrasion process, a new layer forms to take the place
of the older, discolored skin.
